ANPR Automatic Number Plate recognition

This system went live in 1997, it allows a special CCTV Camera to read large volumes of car registration plates and process these through the vehicle databases at PNC and DVLC, this provides the ability to then highlight lost - stolen vehicle in real time, ANPR is able to be used either mobile or from static site.

When ANPR receives a possible response the system usually alerts the operator with the match and the operator can then use the information.

ANPR Also has intelligence uses for tracking vehicle locations as they move across the country, this facility can be used then to see where a vehicle was at a certain time and date.

ANPR is also used by some police forces in a specialist mobile role by having ANPR Camera unit fitted to Police Traffic Patrol cars, the system then checks any vehicle registration which comes into range of the camera and automatically alerts the police patrol officers of suspect vehicles known to PNC.
