Police National Network

The Police National Network is provided via a contract between PITO (Police information technology Orgainisation) and Cable and Wireless.

The initial Police National Network was known as PNN as of 1993 contract.

PNN2 replaces the contract that was put in place in 1993 and will offer a range of telephony and data services including improved communications between the criminal justice systems. It will allow greater access to data, facilitate the electronic movement of mail and files between police users and other agencies and generally support an information rich culture. This will all be done through a restricted network that employs the most modern technology. This network will support both the National
Strategy for Police Information Systems (NSPIS) and the equivalent Scottish systems.

PNN Provides police and any other criminal justice users with a network capable of delivering Data and voice applications as well as other access levels. The PNN will eventually become more than just a police
national network over the next 2 - 3 years it is intended to make PNN available to other users such as government, prison service, criminal justices agencies and the court service.

In one trial all 49 Sheriff Courts are now linked to the Scottish Court Service (SCS) headquarters in Edinburgh, using Police National Network (PNN) services.

PNN Also provides a secure network connecting all UK police services and departments to the Police National Computer.
